Interested in “facts that don’t fit” from an early age, in 1991, Greg Bishop co-founded a magazine called The Excluded Middle, which was a journal of UFOs, conspiracy research, psychedelia and new science. It ceased publication in 1999. “Wake Up Down There!,” which anthologized many of the articles and features, was published in 2000 by Adventures Unlimited.

Greg’s second book was “Project Beta: The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth” (2005 Simon & Schuster/ Pocket Books) which documented a government campaign of disinformation perpetrated against an unsuspecting U.S. citizen. “Weird California,” a portrait of strange and eerie history and places in the Golden State, was released by Sterling Publishers and Barnes & Noble in 2006. Greg contributed about 75% of the material and photos.

From December 2007 to November 2011, Greg blogged for the UFO and paranormal site Ufomystic. His current book “It Defies Language” is composed for the most part of entries from that blog along with older material and brand new articles written just for the collection.

For two years Greg hosted The Hungry Ghost, a radio show of interviews and music airing on pirate FM station KBLT in Los Angeles. The Portage County UFO Chase

In 1966, there was a UFO case that involved a chase and sightings by multiple police witnesses. In addition to their testimonies, there was a reported radar confirmation and a possible pilot witness. Faced with all this evidence, the initial Air Force investigation consisted of two phone calls to a single witness. Based on interviews lasting a total of around four minutes, the conclusion was that the officers had seen a satellite and chased the planet Venus. The case was re-evaluated after a more thorough investigation, thanks to the efforts of an outraged congressman, and the conclusion was . . .  that the officers had seen a satellite and chased the planet Venus.

On the morning of April 17, 1966, two sheriff deputies, Dale Spaur and Wilbur “Barney” Neff, chased a UFO from Portage County, Ohio, for 86 miles all the way into Pennsylvania. They chased the object at speeds ranging from 80 mph to 105 mph and, according to them, there were times when the object actually stopped and waited for them to catch up to it. Other law enforcement officers witnessed the object after being alerted by radio communications between the deputies and their dispatcher.

The strangeness began at 4:30 a.m. A call came over the radio informing the deputies that a woman in Summit County had reported seeing a bright object that flew low over her property. She said it was moving towards Portage County. Spaur and Neff laughed it off and went on with their schedule of spot-checks.

At around 5:00 a.m., they saw an abandoned vehicle on Route 224 near Ravenna, and got out of their car to investigate. According to Spaur, he was in the habit of looking behind him to make sure no one was sneaking up on him.  He turned around and saw a light over the trees of a nearby hill. He alerted Neff, and as they watched, it moved over the police car and hovered. They could now see it was an object 35 to 40 feet wide, with a bright, white glow that lit up the area around the car. DR. MARK J. RODEGHIER earned a B.S. in astrophysics from Indiana University, and an M.A. and PhD in sociology (the latter in the sociology of science) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Rodeghier has worked as a consultant in statistical analysis, predictive analytics, and survey research for a wide variety of academic research studies, industries and not-for-profit organizations Rodeghier had a long-term interest in the UFO phenomenon, and became seriously involved in the mid-1970s with Dr. J. Allen Hynek and the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS). He has published on an eclectic range of topics in UFO research and investigation, including a monograph on reports of UFO interference with vehicles, the psychological and sociological characteristics of abductees, attitudes of the public about anomalies, the changing characteristics of UFOs over time, and detailed analyses of specific cases. Rodeghier became a board member of CUFOS in 1980 and was appointed scientific director of CUFOS in 1986, a position he continues to hold today. David has had a lifelong interest in the UFO subject and has actively investigated and researched it for 30 years. He joined The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 1990 as a Field Investigator Trainee. Since then, he has served as Field Investigator, State Section Director, as well as Illinois State Director. David is currently an independent UFO researcher.​​ During his tenure with MUFON, he had conducted numerous investigations into alleged UFO sightings and related experiences. He has discussed the subject of UFOs on many radio and television news programs over the years. He has also lectured on the subject to various school and adult audiences including at the university level.

DAVID MARLER has assisted the History, Learning, Discovery, Science, and Smithsonian Channel on UFO documentaries over the years in addition to independent productions. David has one of the largest personal libraries of UFO books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and case files from around the world that covers the last 75+ years. Injured by the UFO, Part III

This is the third in a series examining the rather grim subject of UFO related injuries. While we don’t want to dwell on this aspect of the mystery too extensively, it would be remiss to leave the subject without exploring what happened in Brazil in 1977. The events there were extraordinary, as was the investigation by the Brazilian Air Force. Fortunately, it was not the start of a trend in UFO contact, for had it been, many of us might be considerably more anxious.

From April 1977 into 1978, there was a flap over the Amazon Delta in the northeast section of Brazil. Because it involved reports of attacks and injuries, the Brazilian Air Force was moved to put together a special operation to deal with it. It was designated “Operação Prato”, which is Portuguese for “Operation Plate.”

The name was chosen by Captain Uyrangê Hollanda. He explained his choice to researchers Ademar José Gevaerd and Cynthia Luce. Because he was not able to use the expressions, “flying saucer” or “flying disk,” he “chose a cousin of a saucer, a plate.” According to him, the expression in Portugal is “flying plate.” The popular expression in Brazil is “discos voadors.”

Hollanda was head of operations for A2, the intelligence branch of the Air Force. The operation was lead by him, and he had a team of six sergeants. Their equipment consisted of a theodolite, tape recorders and cameras. They were sent to the city of Belém, after the mayors of several surrounding villages complained of UFO attacks on their citizens. Read more →

The Faded Disc Archives

The UFO mystery is not a 20th century phenomenon, but it did in many ways come into prominence in the 20th century. Serious study of UFOs began around World War II and thrived in the following decades. During this golden age of UFO study radio was the dominant form of electronic media. Although film and television existed, radio was a much more important source of timely news and information. Also during this time UFO investigators would find audio recording devices much more portable, reliable and affordable than film equipment. All of this led to an incredible amount of information from the golden age of UFO study being stored in audio formats.
This should not come as a terrible surprise. Even in today’s so-called digital age that finds even children carrying phones that stream multimedia and record video, audio remains an important part of the UFO community. Nationally syndicated radio shows and Internet podcasts allow researchers, witnesses and even debunkers to spread their stories and theories to interested parties all over the world. Of course, these modern UFO programs are easy to find. Where can you find the recorded lectures, interviews and radio shows of yesterday?
Years ago Wendy Connors took up the cause of collecting, preserving and restoring vintage UFO related audio recordings. She started a project called Faded Discs that created an archive of these materials and made them available on CD to fellow researchers. After retiring from active research she decided to place her materials on the Internet library site archive.org which can be found by searching for “Faded Discs” or “Wendy Connors.” You can now stream over 250 hours of vintage material or download them as convenient MP3 files. Although there is some variation in audio quality, they material was restored and remastered for CD so most files are of a decent quality. The files are grouped into collections with descriptions of each file.

Injured by the UFO: Part 2

Starting in the 1960’s, UFOs began to interact with witnesses in a most unpleasant manner. In part one of this series, we looked at cases where people were injured by UFOs, specifically by being burned. One case involved an eight-year-old boy in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1964. This week we’ll look at another episode from 1968 that has a lot of similarities. Two other cases will be examined as well. One comes from New York, and the other is a famous case from Canada. All are unexplained and may make one think twice before approaching anything unusual floating in the sky.

The first case comes from a report in the May-June 1966 APRO Bulletin. On April 24, 1966, in Fleming, New York, 45-year-old Viola Smartwood was in the passenger seat, riding in a car with her husband. A glowing ball appeared out of the rain and hovered close by. They heard a “loud snap,” and a shock went through Mrs. Smartwood’s right side. She was paralyzed on that side and was taken to the hospital where she slowly regained motor control. As it was raining, ball lightning seems like a plausible explanation. The trouble is, it has not been scientifically confirmed that ball lightning actually exists, despite hundreds of years of reports.

Next up is a well-covered classic, but it’s interesting to consider it within this larger context. On May 20, 1967, a celebrated incident occurred near Falcon Lake in Manitoba, Canada. Stefan Michalak was an amateur geologist and was prospecting in the area when he sighted two disc-shaped craft descending in the southwest. He described them as looking like they had been milled out of a solid piece of steel. As he watched, one of the discs stopped and hovered 15 feet above him. The other one ascended and moved away towards the southwest changing colors from red to orange to grey until it disappeared from sight. In the meantime, the remaining object landed about 160 feet away from him and was also changing colors from red to iridescent steel. Michalek got out a pad of paper and sketched the object while looking at it for nearly 30 minutes. He described it as being 40 feet in diameter and 10 feet thick.

While walking, at about 10:45 pm, on October 16th, 2020, in a
semi-urban area of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, I witnessed a
huge, chevron-shaped object. It was moving at a slow rate, roughly
1,4oo feet above sea level (based on the approximate altitude of
clouds blowing past.) It was flying opposite the direction of a high
wind, east to west. It appeared to be several times the size of an
airliner. The object was running without lights, illuminated only by
the moon and light sources on the ground. It seemed to reflect the
ambient color of the sky around it, or may have been semi-transparent.
I heard no sound whatsoever. I was able to observe it clearly for
about one minute, before it was obscured by clouds and light
pollution.

LAX Jetpack – UFO?

It is said we are all products of our environment. Growing up in the 60’s and watching television shows such as The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits fueled an interest in space and the unknown. Television shows and movies soon led to books, but unfortunately this interest had to be put aside to build a career, raise a family, and earn a bachelors in business and master’s in education.
Now with my family grown and pursing their own careers I decided to return to my lifelong interest in the unknown. The first step was in 2008 by joining the Ohio based group the Cleveland Ufology Project (CUP). CUP was primarily a discussion group that provided an avenue to explore various areas associated with ufology. In 2018 I stepped down as co-director of the group in order to allow more time for private UFO research.
The second step also in 2008 was becoming a member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). Since that time, I have advanced from field investigator to State Director of Ohio. Currently have investigated over 300 cases in Ohio with one of the most interesting involving two fisherman who experienced over three and one-half hours of missing time. In addition to working Ohio cases I have also conducted over 230 investigations in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico for MUFONS Case Assistance Group. If that was not enough, I have participated in over 200 community outreach programs discussing UFO’s, been a featured guest on radio and television shows, participated in three documentaries, played an alien in a short film, and host a podcast called UFOdyssey.
In the back of my mind I’ve often wondered why I’m so passionate about ufology. A series of regressions explored my past in search of a possible connection. The regressions indicated personal encounters with UFOs and nonhuman beings beginning in the 1960s. These experiences if true explain that connection.

Every year, around May 10, people from all over the country come together to celebrate the anniversary of a famous UFO encounter. They gather around a monument erected by a group dedicated to all things paranormal and listen to a local tour guide recount the event and the circumstances surrounding it. While this sounds like one of many celebrations in spots throughout the United States, this particular event occurs in Poland, in the little eastern village of Emilcin. The report of a local farmer there, 42 years ago, captured the imaginations of generations of Poles and stirred up a fair amount of speculation and conspiracy theories.

In the early morning, on May 10, 1978, Jan Wolski, a 71-year-old farmer, was heading home through the woods in a horse drawn cart.  In a documentary film made that same year, “Odwiedziny, Czyli u Progu Tajemnicy” (A Visit, or on the Threshold of Mystery), Wolski describes what happened next. He saw two creatures, about five feet tall, ahead of him. As he got close, they split up so he could pass between them. They then jumped up into his cart and started babbling in a strange language. They had slanted eyes, green skin and webbed hands. They were wearing black one-piece outfits with hoods and had a hump just above their shoulders. According to Wolski, “they were polite when they jumped on, so why not let them sit down.”

Two journalists, Krystyna Adamska and Henryk Pomorski interviewed Wolski on tape in July and he gave them a detailed account of the events that followed. Wolski came to a clearing and he saw a white, rectangular craft with what looked rotating drills in tubes on each corner. It was hovering about five meters above the ground and close to the size of a bus. Using gestures, the creatures told him to stop. The horse was scared by the craft and one of them grabbed the reins. Once the carriage was stopped, the creatures jumped down and gestured for Wolski to follow.

BIO: Jack Sliwa is originally from the Boston area, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. and then an MS in Materials Science from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. While at Northeastern University Jack did a CO-OP at the Charles Stark Draper Labs (CSDL) in Cambridge, Mass. where he worked to design and test Inertial Navigation Instruments. He was selected as CO-OP of the year by the late Dr Draper, Prof. Emeritus of MIT, inventor of Inertial Navigation and founder of Draper Labs. Injured by the UFO

Starting in 1947, UFOs seemed to be engaging humanity in a step-by-step process. In the first few years, only the UFOs were reported. Then, there were accounts of occupants showing themselves during what has become known as the 1954 French Wave. An intimate encounter was described by Brazilian farmer, Antônio Villas Boas, in 1957, and Betty and Barney Hill reported that, in 1961,they had been abducted. So far, no one was hurt during any of the encounters, but that would change in 1964.

On Tuesday, June 2, 1964, an eight-year-old boy named Charles was playing in a lot behind his grandmother’s laundromat. What happened next was described in the Nov. 1964 APRO Bulletin. Across an alleyway, a black, top-shaped object, which he described as being half as tall as he was at the time, appeared over a building.

According to Charles, he got the impression that it knew he was there. He moved to the left and it moved to the left. He moved to the right and it moved to the right. He crouched behind a block of concrete and then stood up and moved to the right. Once again, the object mirrored his movement. The object then shot towards him, causing him to brace for impact, but it moved up and hovered over him. According to Charles’ grandmother, as she watched through the door of the laundromat, flame came down from the object that completely engulfed him. The object then flew off and Charles ran towards her with his hair on fire. Read more →

BIO: As a youth growing up in Savannah, Georgia; Lt. Tim McMillan (Ret.) never thought he’d one day end up a police officer. However, in July of 2002, after the murder of two childhood friends, Lt. McMillan found himself consumed with a burning desire to make a positive difference in his community. Less than a year after that tragic July night – at only 21-years old- Lt. McMillan would raise his right hand and be sworn in as a police officer in Garden City Police Georgia.

During his law enforcement career, Lt. McMillan served in a diverse number of roles, including, Patrol Officer; Investigator; Crime Scene Technician; K9-handler; Sergeant, Lieutenant and Assistant Patrol Commander.

Lt. McMillan holds numerous law enforcement certifications including being a criminal investigative and intelligence analyst. Additionally, Lt. McMillan is a P.O.S.T. certified instructor – teaching numerous courses for academy, local, state and federal law enforcement and domestic intelligence officers.

In 2006-2007, Lt. McMillan was named “Officer of the Year” with GCPD. In 2012, while serving as the Part-time Beach Patrol Commander, he was named the 2012 Police Officer of the year for the Tybee Island Police Department. Additionally, of the course of his career, Lt. McMillan was awarded seven Chief’s Accommodations for exceptional service; and in 2004, he was formally commended by Georgia Governor Sonny Purdue for his service during the G8 Summit.
